Trump wants a tiktok agreement, but China could always let it die

President Donald Trump boasted that he would save The popular social media platform Tiktok of a ban in the United States and it could still happen. However, according to those close to talks, the negotiations between the United States and the parent company of Tiktok, bytedance based in China, have blocked.

In a new report of Washington PostThe sources involved in discussions on agreements indicate that it seems that the Chinese government can still let it die unless it receives “more important concessions” from the Trump administration on other policies, such as the trade. Bytedance requires the approval of the Chinese government before signing a sale, and Trump’s new prices have certainly not made potential favors.

During his first mandate, Trump launched the push to ban Tiktok in the United States, citing national security problems. However, Trump left his duties without taking any measures to close Tiktok in the United States. The congress then took the mantle, adopting legislation that the president of the time, Joe Biden, later sign. This forced bytedance to sell Tiktok in 90 days or to face a ban in the United States, which would mean that those in the United States could not download or update the application, and it would not appear in American application stores.

This deadline occurred during the Trump inauguration weekend last month. Tiktok American users temporarily blocked of the platform. After discussions with Trump, during which Trump asked him to “save Tiktok”, Tiktok opened its doors to American users less than a day later. A pop-up prompt in the application Trump thanked by name when users are returned to the platform. Tiktok even organized an inauguration party for Trump, and CEO Shou Chew personally assisted Trump inauguration ceremony.

However, Bytedance is still necessary to sell Tiktok. Trump was involved in negotiations with potential American buyers and even launched the idea of The American government bought participation in the company.

Although Tiktok can technically continue to run in the United States at the moment, applications like those managed by Apple and Google face fines if they listen to its application. Despite Trump’s insurance that the Bytedance deadline to sell Tiktok has been extended, Tiktok remains MIA in the main mobile application stores in the United States

According to an analyst that the Washington Post Talked with, Bytedance is far from desperate to sell while the company wins billions of dollars. For China, intellectual property and successful algorithm can be worth more than any price that Bytedance would obtain for Tiktok. China could also sign the sale of Tiktok, the application, but not the company’s recommendation algorithm that feeds the platform.

Will Trump be the necessary concessions to soften the agreement? Will China even approve an acquisition? Will Tiktok be prohibited again? Things can always go in both directions, but for the moment, they do not move in the direction necessary to sell Tiktok before the new deadline for imminent prohibition.
