The open source code repository says that the “far right forces” are behind massive spam attacks
The Open Source Codeberg code benchmark blamed the extreme right for a recent abuse and harassment campaign through its systems. “The projects advocating tolerance and equality of rights” were subjected to spam campaigns using abusive messages, which intensified at the spam emails sent to users via the own automated Codeberg systems. Codeberg says it is strong “against hatred and hatred” which endangers free software projects.
On February 12, some Codeberg users received codeberg emails containing abusive content. The site indicates that this was sent by an attacker who benefited from the site’s capacity to inform up to 100 users at a time, generating a notification email each time. Codeberg says that although he blocked the accounts and features they have used, “a large amount of notification emails” had already been sent and the site itself has experienced a short time to stop .
“Your private data has not been disclosed,” reassures Codeberg in a statement. “All emails were generated via Codeberg servers using the notification functionality and the abusers did not have access directly to your e-mail address.”
Codeberg is a non -profit organization based in Berlin which provides free and open source software projects based in Berlin. It has more than 150,000 users who have worked on more than 200,000 projects and claims a community that celebrates “free culture, openness and creativity”.
The organization, mainly led by volunteers, says that even if it works with a certain additional ability to manage abuse campaigns, this capacity “was obviously exhausted this time”.
“Spam notification emails to users are a new vector of abuse, and we have not been sufficiently prepared for this,” the statement said. “For that, we are sorry.” The team works on plans to improve their protection against this type of abuse and similar in the future, while responding to users affected by the recent campaign.
One thing that the attack has not done is to dissuade Codeberg’s commitment to open source software, which, according to her, is “in danger” by far -right forces. “By targeting some of our most active translators, the most beautiful designers, the best developers and all other motivated contributors, they harm the ecosystem of free / free software as a whole.”
