Sonos cancels the development of his streaming box in the middle of the strategy change
Sonos abandoned development on a premium streaming decoder which was to be published in 2025, according to The Verge reports.
The company informed its employees of cancellation during a meeting today and reassured the people involved in the project to different teams. This decoder was intended to be the flagship product of Sonos for the second half of 2025, and significant resources had been allocated to its development.
Although it was completed and has undergone several months of beta tests, the acting CEO Tom Conrad has chosen to move the strategic orientation of Sonos, which has led to the abandonment of his video initiative at the moment.

The now abundant “Pinewood” project was designed to compete with devices such as Apple TV and other streaming boxes, with a price range from $ 200 to $ 400.
It was envisaged as an elegant black box with an aesthetic Android interface that would provide access to content from platforms such as Netflix, Max, Disney Plus and various other streaming services.
Sonos aimed at minimizing fragmentation in the streaming landscape and distinguishing your streaming box from competitors, it was also designed to function as an HDMI switch. This would have allowed users to connect game consoles, sound bars and other devices thanks to the functionality of Passhrough, solving a latency problem which has long been a concern for Sonos.
The company intends to focus on software improvements to rectify the problems caused by the problematic update of the application published last May.
