NATO supports its first cohort of European dual -use startups
With vice-president JD Vance and the American defense secretary Pete Hegseth to do strong noise Friday about Europe which intensifies the plate by spending more for its own defense, it could be surprising that Europe is Already On the much larger investment pathway in defense, especially in technology.
Not only investment in “defense, resilience and security” technology (DSR) reaches a summit of 10% of all VC funding in EuropeBut the United Kingdom and NATO have now intensified this week with the launch of the first cohort of startups approved by NATO under its accelerator of defense innovation for the North Atlantic (Diane) Program, in partnership with the United Kingdom
Diana provides new startup technologies for NATO countries and includes a network of 23 affiliated accelerator sites and 182 test centers. It is designed to link defense staff, startups and defense “premium” entrepreneurs.
UK Defense and security accelerator (DASA) directs the British Front, in partnership with the IoT tribe who in turn directs the Consortium Janus on double -use technologies. This also includes Atmos VC, a deep technology investor and the Setsquared partnership (a collaboration between six British universities led by research and a range of defense industry partners). The nickname “Janus” comes from the Roman god of duality, reflecting the nature for double use of civil and defense technology that will emerge from the program.
The first cohort of Five startups has now been selected for a six -month program with DASA. Companies are distributed over AI, electronics, semiconductors and materials science, and have been selected from the 2,400 applications.
During a call with Techcrunch, Tanya Suarez, CEO of IoT Tribe, said that 74 companies had been selected and advanced, five passing through the accelerator in London.
“With Dasa, we organize competitions for the defense of the United Kingdom, and we have also bought an additional capacity in this system to bring our own businesses,” she said. “The cohorts who live at the moment respond to the call for surveillance and detection. We therefore examine the technologies that could be used to essentially monitor people or equipment. »»
“We have very close links with our customers through the defense, and we have a very great sense of the problems and the challenges they are trying to overcome,” she added.
“Thanks to DASA’s partnership with NATO Diana, we accelerate the development of double -use technologies … which will benefit military and civil applications through the Alliance.”
