Meta would have tested internal chips for IA training
Meta would have tested an internal chip for the training of AI systems, part of a strategy to reduce its dependence on equipment manufacturers like Nvidia.
According to ReutersThe Meta chip, designed to manage the workloads specific to AI, was manufactured in partnership with the company based in Taiwan TSMC. The company pilots a “small deployment” of the chip and plans to extend production if the test succeeds.
Meta has already deployed personalized AI chips, but only to execute models – not form them. As Reuters notes, several of the company’s flea design efforts were canceled or otherwise reduced after failing to meet internal expectations.
Meta plans to spend 65 billion dollars on capital expenses this year, a large part of which will go to the NVIDIA GPU. If the company manages to reduce a fraction of this cost by moving towards internal fleas, it would be a great victory for the social media giant.
