It’s a great moment for classic RPGs
Suikoden is a game that I wanted to play for years. A very popular role -playing game from the original era of the Playstation, it is renowned for its sprawling scenario and its huge casting of playable characters. It also makes him quite intimidating, and I had a copy sitting on My PS Vita I’m just waiting when I could have free time to finally dig. After all this expectation, I now play a new remastered collection which includes the first two games in the series instead. And that made me realize that, in recent months, my personal playing time has been dominated by classic RPGs based on the turn – an experience that has really explained the field of gender possibilities.
It started with the Excellent new version of Dragon Quest 3Launched last November. This game was the equivalent of the comforting food of video games: an extremely simple fantastic adventure that has been transformed with magnificent visuals, a lush orchestral soundtrack and very welcome quality of quality of life. Shortly after, Mistwalker released An updated version of Fantasy. It is technically not an old game – it originally Make its debut on Apple Arcade in 2021 – but he has the soul of one, with Final Fantasy The creator Hironobu Sakaguchi using it as a way to explore new ideas in presentation and fight. Then, to top it all, the “Remaster Pixel” version of the very first Final Fantasy Arcade hitting in January.
These are all the games I had played before, but searching them again in rapid succession made me appreciate their strengths. DQ3 And FF Embody a real sense of adventure. The two have simple stories that are easy to follow (or ignore, if you do not care about these kinds of things) but places and systems that make adventure in cities, dungeons and in the broader world. DQ3 Has this type of experience incredibly accessible, with its beautiful new presentation and its rationalized gameplay, while I discovered that FF is probably the ideal mobile game: something deep enough to keep me engaged, but also an experience where you always have the impression of progressing when you only have a short window to play.
FantasyIn the meantime, it is like a modern reinterpretation of what a classic turn -based RPG could be. In many ways, it’s classic FFFrom the amnesic protagonist to the world which is a mixture between fantasy and science fiction. But he also has intelligent twists on the formula, such as battles that allow you to target attacks and a tool to delay random battles when you just want to explore. All this is above the title Visuals in real dioramas. And even if I’m only a few hours to play Suikoden For the first time, I have already been struck by the ambition of its narration, which manages to pile up a lot of political intrigue within the limits of a traditional RPG structure.
This is to say that even at a time when there are a lot of impressive, large and modern RPGs as Declared And Dragon AgeThere is still something distinct and interesting in the classic turn -based formula, and it is exciting to see all the ways in which various studios have used it over the years. It is true that you replay a new version of something old or, like me, to try Suikoden For the very first time. Even better: there is even more to come. As Sakaguchi told me Earlier this year, when it comes to the next game of his studio, their “objective is to create something old but new at the same time”.
