Google Maps changed the Gulf of Mexico in America
Google officially updated the cards to label the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”, following US President Donald Trump‘s Executive decree reversing the sea. Fortunately, the technology giant also retains the internationally recognized name of the Gulf that he held For at least 1552 – At least, for non -American users.
At the end of last month, Google confirmed that it would update the cards To reflect Trump’s directive, reversing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as Denali at Mount McKinley. The technology giant said that it only retained the changes due to its “long -standing practice to apply name changes when they have been updated in official government sources”.
The relevant government source in this case is the United States Information system on geographic names (GNI), who had not yet been updated with the new American name in the Gulf. Trump’s decree gave a 30 -day deadline for name changes to be made, in particular by deleting all references to the Gulf of Mexico of GN.
Now the GNI has executed at least one of Trump’s name changes, labeling the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” As such, Google Maps has followed suit.

On the other hand, the seizure of the “Gulf of Mexico” in Google d’Australia is reflected in text reading “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”. Likewise, Google Maps retains the name of the Gulf of Mexico, but adds the Gulf of America in parentheses both at the end of research and the labeling of the card. The search for “Gulf of America” evokes the relevant sea as the first result (labeled as such without mention of Mexico), but the card is not centered on it, and several American companies are also suggested.

Trump proclaimed on February 9 last Sunday “Very first Gulf of America Day” To commemorate his change of name of the Gulf. The president also called “civil servants and all residents of the United States to observe this day with programs, ceremonies and appropriate activities”. It is not clear what Trump activities could judge appropriate on this occasion, but it will probably not be a public holiday.
Interestingly, Denali has always kept its name on Google Maps for the moment, rather than on its new label of Mount McKinley Trump. GN has not yet changed the name of the mountainIt therefore seems that Google is still waiting for it to be official.
